The moments when you realize you want to become a natural, its not a debate that should be discussed with your family, friends, co-workers or the strangers in the street. Its your own personal journey. Being surrounded by those who aren't going through the struggles of product testing or figuring out what hairstyle works best for you, they just don't understand.
Unfortunately, with the relaxed, weave, wig and/or extension wearers, hurtful and disencouraging comments arises little by little every passing day.
It starts off small with:
"What are you doing to your hair?"
"Oh what kind of style is that!"
"Oh, I don't think that natural thing is working with you."
Then it gets worst:
"Ummm, yeah, I heard that only mixed black people can go natural so you shouldn't even bother"
"Did you finish your hair? Oh, I couldn't tell"
"I'm embarrassed to walk down the street with you, you hair makes you look unkempt like you don't care."
And when you start to hear those types of comments over and over again, it really can turn you away from the process that YOU decided was best for you. Because, really, as a woman, we get enough ridicule from other woman and you don't want your hair to be added to the judgmental comments.
The best advice of "ignore them, they do nothing for you in your everyday life," is great to hear, but what if it comes from your own family and friends.
The trial and error process is tough, but there are so many products to try from this billion dollar industry others just have to deal and shut up.
Let us rock until we get comfortable. Besides, its not their hair!!!
When you finally find your way, that's when you'll hear, "Ooo, you look cute" from that same harsh critique.
Needless to say, by that time, you've become a stronger individual and don't need anyone else's approval because guess what...you've always been cute.
Why do the people in our lives go out their way to make these types of comments? Have you ever experienced this type of bashing?
